Ever load a game just to play the music?
Posted by: sysop - 07-30-2022, 10:57 PM - Forum: C64 and C128 Software - Replies (13)

I used to do this quite a bit (I guess I still do). Today, playing SIDs is a little more convenient than it was, back "in the day". With modern technology, you can easily record a SID tune to an MP3, or use a third-party player to natively play SID tunes. But, back in the 80s and 90s, I had to play SIDs the "old school" way. I had to actually load the games, or the demos, on my C64 and 128 to listen to them.

In the late 90s, I did get my hands on a SID/MUS player for my Commodore - I can't remember if it was on Quantum Link or a Loadstar disk - which made the process a little more convenient. But, even so, today I still find myself loading up a game just to play the tunes that I like.

Like this one, for example!

Don't Stop Me Now!

Have you got some favorite tunes that you load up a game just to listen to?

  Looking for Jeff Minter games
Posted by: TheHighlander - 07-27-2022, 02:07 PM - Forum: Market Place - Replies (4)

Sometimes you just gotta get that collection complete...

Looking for the following games by Jeff Minter of Llamasoft:

  • Yak's Progress
  • Ancipital

Can be tape or disk, as long as it's original packaging and includes a manual. Oh and a sane price would nice Smile

These games are distributed for free by Jeff himself, but only in digital form naturally.

  Mad Magazine's Mad Program Excuse
Posted by: 8bitflynn - 07-26-2022, 10:45 AM - Forum: C64 and C128 Programming - Replies (1)

This is a bit of a continuation of my original post on Everything64 where I finally found out Mad Magazine issue #258 had a bug in it.

The program was supposed to plot Alfred E Nueman's face, but I never got it working in the 80's. Sometime years later I typed the IBM version in and it worked fine on there.

Fast forward to 2020 when I attempted many times to get the Commodore 64 version of the code running only to find that there was a bug in the printed Commodore 64 code!

Once I got the BASIC version working I was curious if / when the bug was acknowledged. corrected in later Mad Magazines and found it in issue #260. What I found interesting about it was that the bug correction was one small paragraph stating that the Commodore 64 version did not work because there were different versions of the BASIC ROM but it seems really unlikely that the BASIC ROM was to blame rather than a simple mistake printed in the magazine.

Its seems much more likely that it was an actual bug in the program. Great excuse though!

To waste more time I converted the BASIC version to machine language. What me worry!?

Music Web Based SID Player
Posted by: sysop - 07-26-2022, 04:58 AM - Forum: C64 and C128 Emulation - Replies (1)

Stumbled across this recently and I thought I'd post it here for anyone interested.

This is an on-line, web-based SID player that you use via your web browser:  Web SID Player

You can either play the SIDs that are already in the website's library, or you can upload your own SID files into the player.  So, if you're at the office and don't have any SID player software installed on your PC, just use your web browser to play and enjoy your favorite SID tunes.

It's not retro to me; it's just how I live
Posted by: sysop - 07-25-2022, 06:24 PM - Forum: Member Introductions - Replies (11)

Welcome to the new C64Forum.com!  We hope that this site can become an enjoyable place to share information and experiences with our beloved Commodore (and more) home computers, with others who enjoy retro computing.

I've joined up on several other Commodore relates forums and blogs as the user VirtualSky.  But, as I've mentioned in previous blog entries, I miss the days of the dial up sites and the Sysop.  So, here, I'm Sysop... but you can call me David if you'd prefer.  Are you old enough to remember the days of dialing up a BBS and hoping to see the cursor type out "THE SYSOP IS IN"?

Have my own Commodore blog site here: https://www.my64.in.nf  which you can also reach via:  https://www.my128.in.nf

You can also check out my Backloggery account, here: https://www.backloggery.com/Judland

I live in Saskatchewan, Canada, out on the prairie in the middle of nowhere.  So, I probably have the only operational C64 and 128 in a thousand kilometer radius (if not more)!   Big Grin

  Donut Dodo
Posted by: TheHighlander - 07-24-2022, 08:27 AM - Forum: Arcade Games - Replies (2)

This is not 8bit or Commodore related, but any fan of arcade games should know about this game:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1779560/Donut_Dodo/

Donut Dodo by Pixel.Games. This game has many references to arcade classics and it looks and plays like the arcade game all arcade platformers aspired to be. The music is fantastic and it alone makes me want to play more. It's hard but it's fair and very playable. The controls are superb and certainly worth your time, especially at that price.

Pixel.Games is just a single guy with some track record in game development with some of the bigger studios. He's made a number of games. If they're all remotely like this I'm playing them all!

Information Imagae or Videos not displaying in peoples posts
Posted by: sysop - 07-23-2022, 10:01 PM - Forum: About The Forum - No Replies

If you not seeing images or videos other people are linking in their post, and are only seeing the BBCode, try this fix:

  1. Click on the User CP link at the top of the web page.
  2. Under Your Profile, on the left hand side of the screen, click on Edit Options.
  3. Under the grouping entitled Thread View Options, uncheck/check off the content you wish to see (or not see).  If images and videos are already checked off, just uncheck an check off again.
  4. Click on the Update Options button at the bottom of the screen.

All should be good, now.

Briley Witch Chronicles vs Lykia - The Lost Island
Posted by: sysop - 07-23-2022, 09:35 PM - Forum: C64 and C128 Software - Replies (4)

I recently posted a review of these two games on my Commodore blog, HERE

Here's the first few paragraphs. If you'd like to read the entire article, check out my blog.

Because these games (at first) look so familiar to one another, I'm going to do a sort of versus kind of review. The games are, The Briley Witch Chronicles, by Sarah Jane Avory, and Lykia - The Lost Island, by Stefan Mader, Rbert Kisnmeth, and Olaf Nowacki.

In Briley, you play the character of a young woman, torn from her modern day world to try and exists as a witch in a backwards village in an age from centuries past. A strange sickness is taking over the inhabitants and you must find out what's going on. In Lykia, you play the character of a 16 year old girl who stumbles into an adventure full of strange and magical events. You must do what you can to save your fellow villagers from what's happening to the land. Sound familiar? Once you star playing the games, you'll discover that, apart from the cutesy plots and characters, these games are not the same.

Both games are in the RPG style; Briley is turn-based (like Final Fantasy) and Lykia is more of an action RPG (like Zelda). Both games have an inventory system, health meters, and are in the third person top-down perspective, but combat is handled differently. In Briley, battle happens in turns. Each character in your group (aka party) is directed as to what actions they are to carry out; like attack, change weapons, heal, etc. Hit points, health, experience points are then tallied.

Lykia is not turn-based. You move your character with joystick and choose what items/weapons you carry in your hands. And, when approached by enemies, you press the fire button to use the weapon you're holding (swing a sword, throw a net, etc.). If you get hit, your life bar goes down.

Art styles are also different. Briley is more in a cartoon style, like Zelda with lot's of solid colours and black line tracing. Lykia seems to be trying to be slightly more stylized, if I can call it that, with lots of dithering and more subtle transitions. Lykia also has some extra environmental elements that makes the scenery more dynamic, like shadows of clouds moving in the sky above, and overhead beams when inside some buildings that obscure some of the scenery below.
